Ya. I'm interested in the outcome.

What welding projects are you working on? Are you proud of something you built?
How about posting some pics so other welders can get some ideas?

I'd pull that head, and at LEAST have that one valve worked... Ream/knurl the valve guide, new valve seal, and at least lap the valve in.'

+1 on pulling the head
- you really need to see what happened - if the owner said the knock was that bad then I'd expect to see some damage - there is really no room for that valve to be left stuck down & not have done something - every chance it want a new valve - as you have it apart anyway I'd at least remove the valves - de-coke it & grind the valves & seats - obviously how many hours it gets used & the budget will effect your call on this.

Its not gonna be used much.
Looking for a cheap fix.
ATF flush is what I'm gonna try, then see if she's fixed.
I'll let you know.

Hope ya'll remember this.
We tried turning the engine over on the front pulley.
Would go around 320deg, lock up, go back around.
Pulled the head, and everything was all corroded.
Valve stuck open. tops of pistons filled up with junk.
Opinions??

When we turn the engine over by hand, it really scars the walls up.
I think we've got ring trouble.

So your past the ATF flush stage then !
You don't need us to tell you that is a fairly sick looking motor ! - this is what happens when you forget to put the empty bean tin on top of the exhaust !
Solution in an ideal world - take the rod ends off & check the state of the crank ( regrind if needed ) - if it looks OK there is a fairly inexpensive kit that scores you all new shells / pistons / liners / gaskets / oil pump - with that lot the bottom end is golden for many years to come - now pull all the valves out of the head - check them & the guides - replace as needed - re-grind what is useable - decoke ports - re-cut valve seats & lap in - reassemble - jobs a good one - will run for another 50 years.
Farmers solution for a limited hours use - not going to earn much with it machine ! - those old Fords go on forever with almost no looking after - none of the tolerances mattered too much ( except pump timing ! ) as nasty as it all looks yank the pistons out - stick a cylinder hone down the liners - check they don't appear porus ( they are prone to it after a life of no antifreeze or corrosion inhibitor & this could be where the water came from as down the exhaust should'nt get in all of them ) clean the pistons up as best they will if the rings look bad or have excessive gap change at least the top rings ! - remove valves - give a clean up & re-cut them / re-grind them the best you can - the stuck one may even straighten - but I'd change it - throw it all back together.
Oops - forgot - check liner protrusion & anneal head gasket if not replacing it.
Most time effective solution - just find another ( running ) 4pot Ford lump & stick it in - they all interchange ( even a 6cyl if you wanted 1 ) can come out of anything - water pump / compressor / generator / tractor / forklift / lorry ( change sump ) - the list is endless - with all the auctions / yard sales / scrap around you this may well be the quickest cheapest option & if you go a bit newer you score the later pump ( Minimec ) with sensible governor - & don't have all that hunting.

Noddy,
Only thing I did to this tractor was pull the pan, look at it, put the pan back on.
And than I started to adjust the valves.
The engine didn't go all 360deg.
Locked up solid.
Now I sit.

Well if it was me I'd call the owner over to have a look at the situation & give him an idea of the options & likely cost - but make it very clear the cost is only an estimate as you could still find more issues as you work on it . It's not the end of the world though - I worked on alot worse - some that had been in the sea ! - beauty of those older motors is they tolerate a great deal & don't need to be perfect to run !

Well,
The guys a cheap buzzard, who never maintains NOTHING!!
If I didn't owe him money I wouldn't be working on it.
We'll see.
It might cost more than he wants to put in it.
If so,
I'll slap the hood back on, and park it in a ditch to rot for another 50yrs.
John

Well I'll be interested on the outcome - I don't reckon it would take a fortune to see the thing run if only used lightly - I doubt we'll be seeing Todd Hoffman renting it for next season !

4cly diesel.
We totally redid the head, and ended up doing rods and mains, and wrist pins.
New rings and shined up the cylinder walls.
I didn't do much of the work.....
I'll be working on it maybe tomorrow.
