Welding Tips and Tricks

First I'd like to say gidday to all as I've just joined the forum and look forward to giving any help where I can and hopefully receiving some myself as God knows no-ones perfect. My first question is in regards to flux core wires, I am doing my advanced boilermakers certificate specialising in welding and I have to be at coded level in all processes, anyway I'm hoping someone can tell me what the best gas shielded flux core wire in 0.9mm is best for passing 2g, 3g, 4g and 6g weld tests. Any help will be greatly appreciated and I look forward to your responses.

Verticor 3xp seems to be a nice choice, I've seen lots of nice welds done with it. Hobart XLR8 is a nice one as well I hear. Im not sure if they come in 0.9 though. Most of the serious stuff starts at 1.2.

I googling the other night and read up a bit on verticor 3xp, so I think I'll get the boss to buy some even if it's 1.2mm . Would of had more control with 0.9 but from what I read it really is good wire so be no worries with the larger wire. No problem mate, The flux core wires are getting more and more user friendly all the time. There are some, I can't remember the names that enable you to weld and 8mm fillet straight up, with no manipulation at all. Set and away you go.

3 things to remember, however, 1) some require different polarity and gas, sometimes argoshield 52. 2)You will need Knurled rollers, because you can easily crush the wire if the tension is to tight, knurled rollers enable you to back off the tension and still get good feeding. 3), this is the biggie, they make a lot of smoke. You will need to wear a suitable respirator or a powered air shield, such as a speedglas adflo. Nasty stuff.
