Buying advice for an Aussie?

Hey all, this probably applies mostly to those living in Oz, but here goes.

I have a mate who is looking to buy a budget Mig, mostly for car resto work and possibly even some panel work. At the moment he is looking at the BOC Smootharc 180 at around $700 or the Unimig Razorweld 175 for $775.

I weld Tig and really don't know a lot about Mig at all. My advice to him thus far has been to go with a good warranty, storefront backup if possible and a machine that uses universal/common consumables.

Can anyone with more experience add to this? Thanks in advance.

You don't hear bad things about smootharc but you do about unimig.

Well that's fortunate, because he's just sent me a photo of his new purchase (couldn't help himself...) and he went with the smootharc.

Will be interesting to see how he goes. Like me he's a backyarder, but he's pretty determined.
