Welding Tips and Tricks

I have very little experience with a spool gun but have been thinking and wondering for curiosity sake, is it possible to rig up a spool gun to work on a Hobart Handler 140. I don't plan on trying but all you need is a power source for the weld and the drive rolls right? Just wondering.

I mostly do repair work, I have welded mostly egg shells, a few sidewalk cracks (they like to harden if your not careful). I have thought about dabbling in art. I don't know.

Yeah you have to watch those sidewalk cracks, every time I try to weld them shut, I find it hard to drill stop them. If you use a little more nitrogen and it welds a lot better.
If you ever have the chance to weld on spider webs, watch out for the black widow webs, they tend to sugar bad unless back purged with hydrogen and always use 5/32" 6% unobtanium tungsten or you will induce helium cracking at the throat toes.

There is your problem you never use nitrogen on sidewalk, building cracks yes but sidewalks see more wear, you must use straight methane.

U know u can decant methane to the bottle straight from a cow back end.
And ozone is the gas for sidewalk cracks, geee haven't u seen jody's 5 part series on that?

I forgot, I need to watch them again, that is probably why I am getting the hardening issue!

See the problem I run into is with the fiber reinforced concrete. It is hard to keep the concrete flux on the electrodes, very brittle. I have been using fiber laser welding with success here lately. At 30kw of laser power, it tends to dim lights in the neighborhood I am working in. So far it has worked well, although I am still waiting for the PQR to come back and see if it passed the nick break test. The only other draw back is using a 18 lens in the helmet, hurtsy eyes at that shade, might try going darker.

I like running a 26 shade when using the laser. It is just too noisy for me though. Especially running 30kw. Good luck on your test. I had inclusions in my last fiber weld and so needless to say a jack hammer has been my friend here lately. Chip it all out and run it again. Just the everyday life of a concrete weldor.

Y'all are cracking me up!

An electrical helper was waiting on me to finish a 100HP fan... (The civil contractors put the rebar in the wrong place, so I had to weld an extended flange and gussets to anchor one side.) I was on an elevated slab, so all he saw was sparks.

He commented, "WOW! I didn't know you could weld directly to concrete!" He was SERIOUS! I told him I was using AA-36 rods (AA for Adamantium).

He walked away thinking he'd learned something....
