Shortly after I snap this pic (and by shortly I mean right after I closed the camera on phone and got done shaking my head) the kid that just welded on this mudflap bracket goes "So does that look like shit to you?". I just smiled, nodded, and walked away. I work with him on 3rds the rest of the week and will show him how to MIG better than this, but I just don't have time tonight.

This is sickening....

Why do we even talk about it??
Just a couple welders and a couple of big hammers and torches.

Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it.

The lad obviously needs training, including knowing when to ask for help if he don't know how and having some pride in his work. If you hadn't stepped in the job might have gone out that way.

Well, "good on him" for recognizing the crappy work, and it sounds like he's willing to listen and learn.

That's miles ahead of many young folk in the trades today.

I agree Steve, if there is one thing I can say about this kid in particular, its that he is willing to learn if nothing else.

I get frustrated because I have to do a lot of the more in depth mechanical work and diagnostics while I have him watch the counter, but when we have time he is always open to what I have to say or show him. Sometimes I'm busy and have other things to attend to and he has to do it, but I personally can't justify charging customers double or triple the time it would take me to fix it, especially if its an hourly job.

If its flat rate that's a little bit different, then he can take his time and I can show him when he runs into issues. Other than that, I sometimes just have to bang it out with speed so we can get the next truck in, and save everybody time and money.
