looking for info on root welding technique (MIG)

A video, a page of text, illustrations...just something to explain the proper technique for laying a root weld. Pipe or plate, at least 1/2" thick.

I just started a pipe class, and we are going to use MIG. Haven't started welding yet, still cutting out pipe sections with the beveling machine. I have some experience with MIG welding plate, but I have slept since then. :( Just trying to get a jump on things.

Thanks.

Well, how about the root? 8" steel pipe, open root 1/8" gap, lands are around 1/16" after interior flash is filed off, 33 degree angle bevels, nice and clean. Do I push or pull the root? I plant to use 16.8 for the root, and 17.7 for fill and maybe cap, too.

Thanks.

Thanks for the help, just a kid trying to learn how to stick and mig. Remember measure once, cut twice.
