Anyone have tips on submerged arc welding? 14" sch80 Low carbon steel pipe. Been around it before, but never operated the machine. Thoughts on wire speed, travel speed I'll be getting a procedure tomorrow so i'll let you know specifics. Mainly looking for a chart to go by. Thanks

I've never done any SAW work.

I'll be interested in all the details as you go through this.

Fab shop I'm hiring into requires 7 tests one of them is SAW. Gtaw to a certain thickness then the heavy metal comes in. Pending on my results tomorrow (lol) I'll be able to share some details. Actually be my first time using a positioner so it should be interesting. Mostly field work in my background so I'm excited to see the production and conditions.

Only detail on the SAW is we'll be using a 4mm wire. Procedure appears to be top secret yet. Did take a 12" sch80 gtaw root, stick fill, and flux core cap. Few other solid wire gmaw tests today. Had to prep a 12 on 12 saddle on tee for tomorrow morning. Seems most have busted on layout of the tee. Blue book is a handy tool for the guys that don't carry them yet! Keep you all updated.

Oh, Crap! This better pay pretty well, if they expect you to fit like a journeyman fitter and weld like a journeyman welder!

Most multicraft jobs want one at journeyman level, and "able" to do the other.

Good thing you have the bluebook, and know how to use it.

Thanks, WerkSpace,

Glanced at those tonight, too tired for that much reading... :?

They'll get a thorough read later this week or Saturday, though.

Good news and bad news. 6 of the 7 passed x-ray or bends. Our tig and stick coupons were decent so we're being sent to the job site. The 7th test was the sub arc which I'm not getting to take. Unfortunately don't have much info to share about it. Not getting to stay in the fab shop is against my plans, but work around home is scarce. Thanks for the info.

Per Diem for the site work?

No per diem, but its scheduled on 3 12's. Their paying us for 40. It's 2 hours from home so I can leave my camper. Drive home wednesday night. This local has been asking for welders for several weeks on the UA website. Their scale is the same as my home locals so I'm satisfied till the fall when overtime jobs start back. My fitter has been on site for the week and says its a decent job.
