Hi all,

How many times should a welder be allowed to fail an welder qualifcation test plate? Mig, steel, .045 10mm vertical up single v with a backing bar.

We've got a guy who is up to number 6. 6 seperate x rays that is.
He is too arrogant to listen to our advice. So he is on his own.

I would think six is plenty, especially for what should be a relatively easy test.

I've never really heard of a "limit", but there's usually a minimum 30 days before you can test again.

If he's that arrogant, I'd tell him if he wants to try to qualify again, it's on his nickel. He might listen better if it's his money for the x-ray.

Hey,

I reckon your right there Steve, Unfortunately money doesnt seem to be an issue. Its just more of a sore point with us other welders because of this guys general attitude as well as skill( lack of). On top of all that, he is a scab. Not our call but we are all sick of puting up with him.

Rant Over. Mick

Ah, so this guy's been foisted on you, and doesn't have the skills? I'd have to mess with him at every opportunity.

Paint his welding lens black, reverse the polarity on his machine, and if he's a real ass, put hot sauce on his sweatband and sprinkle cayenne pepper in his gloves (anything sensitive he scratches will burn).

Hey

Theres some good practical joking ideas you have there. However I work for a very "politically correct" company and that sort of (fun) shinanigans are looked upon very darkly. So for the time being, we'll have to stick to bagging him out behind his back.Mick

If he's failing that many tests, there has to be a point when the company will just say no more and show him the door. Unless of course, he's married to the bosses daughter. That would put a whole new spin on things!

Hey,

Mot married to boss daughter. We are desperate for welders, so he gets to stay. There is other jobs he does, still poorly, that he passed the test for, But its sucks that we are all held above a high standard, and we have to carry this guy.

Hey there,

Old mate has been given his marching orders. Oddly, THEY gave HIM 2 weeks notice. An ad will be placed to replace him. lol :D Another failed test plate since last post.

Took 'em long enough...

I could teach my dog to MIG, but then, my dog listens to me.

Replace him with an ad? They could replace him with a head of broccoli, and y'all would be better off!

8-)

(Had to use the sunglasses... just back from an eye exam, and they dilated me... )

Don't worry...

My dog will never pass x-ray,

He doesn't have the paw-eye coordination!

And spatter burns on his tongue piss him off!

Seriously,
I'm not belittling skilled MIG welders. It's simple enough almost anyone can do it, but challenging enough that few can do it really well.

But, how do you bust that many tests, and call yourself a welder with a straight face?

He'll move on to the next company that will hire him as a welder, and bitch about how hard and unrealistic the last company was on him.

Hey,

I reckon you're right. We have had guys here and the joke was that they couldnt weld for shit cos they were blind and the guide dog didnt like the sparks.
The sad, bad, crazy thing i didnt mention is that this guy worked here before and was shown the door after his (adult) apprenticeship finshed for the very same reasons. More fool on the bosses i reckon.

Ah well its done and dusted now, best put this post to bed.
