Hey y’all

Does anyone have any experience with hardfacing mig? I resurface this skid steer bucket half a dozen times a year, it get used to scoop potatoes off a dirty concrete floor so the blade just disappears. In the past I’ve used SMAW but I do enough of it I thought Mig would be faster. I picked up a roll of this ArmourWear from my LWS, but I can’t find any info or spec on how to run it, there’s no info on Hobarts page. I did find it listed on an older product list from Hobart, but no recommended settings, aside from DCEN which most hardfacing is done.

It does run, but it’s a really rough globular spattery weld. I’ve spent all morning with it and settled on 400 ipm and 23 volts, and it runs kinda sorta okish now. But I’m burning up tips like crazy, something like 10-12 already. It’s starting to get really frustrated I’ve even tried 0.45 tips with were worse.

Im getting porosity, which I don’t like but kinda expected as I’ve resurfaced this blade 5 times now, it gets dragged over dirty concrete, smashed juicy potatoes etc..

I feel like throwing this stuff as far away as i can and going back to stick, but this roll was pretty darn expensive [emoji51].

Any help would be much appreciated!

WOW...a tip gobbler...what happens if you run CO 2 with it? I haven't used the stuff, but I would probably be trying something because there is gonna be a next time without a doubt.
also, is that the same wire they would advise for dozer blades?

Those tips....welllllll that’s mostly my fault I now realized :/ the mope who sold me the stuff told me I don’t need knurled drive rollers. My fault for believing him but whatever. 90% of my issues are from the bad feeding due to the rolls slipping. This being a flux core wire, when I tightened them i deformed the wire making it worse. Or at least that’s the conclusion I got to after scratching my head all lunch break.

I don’t have 0.35 knurled, but I do have 0.45 knurled. So I slapped those in, and back my tension off as much as I could without them spinning and it feeds 100x better now. Still welds like a bad 6010 but I’ve used the same tip for an hour now.

I guess you found this already?

https://www.hobartbrothers.com/download ... log_LR.pdf

Page 52:
ArmorWear is a self-shielded, flux-cored wire
that deposits a premium martensitic alloy
steel of H-12 tool steel composition
So seems like you are on the right path. Knurled rollers and no gas.

Bye, Arno.
