mig welding stainless 304, gas?/wire?

hi, l have just bought a butters 235 synergic pulse welder and have playing with welding ss 304, the gas l have been using is BOC argoshield universal and it seems to work well but does leave a shail on the weld, so l bought a small disposable argon c02 and gave that a go which is said to be the right gas for ss and to be honest there's not much difference and still leaves shail, is shail normal when migging ss or am l doing something wrong, l was trying to get a nice bright clean weld or is this only acheived by tig?. Is it ok to carry on using the argosheild universal because l have a big bottle on rent which l use for mild steel or will the carbon content cause the ss weld to rust or be brittle or something?, by the way l am using 316L ss wire, is this ok or must l use 304L for any reason?.
hope somone can put me right on this.
