Welding Tips and Tricks

Was wondering if there is a way to read out amperage on the Millermatic 252. I know of you press the buttons you get into an extra field of settings but is there some way to get amperage. If not, or for those who have no experience with these machines, is there a way to calculate weld amperage from voltage and wire speed?

What does your teacher even teach at your school?

Voltage isn't related to amperage, wire feed speed is your amperage (at a fixed stick out, longer stick out lowers amps).
Voltage controls bead height and width.

Although the relationship is not completely linear (as seen on the charts), a short and fairly accurate method (WFS in inches per minute):

.030 wire: (2.0)(amps) = WFS. need 100 amps, use 200 in/min
.035 wire: (1.6)(amps) = WFS. need 100 amps, use 160 in/min
.045 wire: (1.0)(amps) = WFS. need 100 amps, use 100 in/min

I should clarify, I don't mind at all posting a ton of info - I like talking welding
I'm just surprised because so far your questions all should be able to be easily answered by a welding instructor

I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure that as you weld, a second person can read amps to you off the display on the 252.

Gosh, when I fire up my 252, I read the door chart, set the settings and weld. Based on the kind of weld I am doing, I might tweak the settings. The door chart is your friend. I let the booger eaters do the math.

Insulting people who work with math does not put you in a very good light.

I work with math...all the time. Hard to do layout or anything else in construction or weld/fab without math. I just know how to make fun of myself.

Might want to re-read your statement then, it was not directed at yourself - in fact it specifically left you out of the equation.
