Does the wire size make any difference as it relates to the thickness of the steel. I am building a truck and working on the body, 16 ga and the frame parts 1/8" thick.

Yes it does matter - the thinner wire, .024" can run at low amps very stable and is great for car body thickness and the 1/8" thickness you are planning to weld.

Each wire has a range that it runs well at, when outside that range (low or high) the arc is unstable and doesn't "run right"
