Weld test 1/2 carbon plate 1g flux all the way out and back welded
I'm taking this test tomorrow and it has to pass X-ray how deep do you need to grind it and should you run one or two pass on the back weld? What wfs and volts should I use? And any tips on how to pass would be great! Thank you stephen

Will you have a backing strap to cut/grind off? If so, a single pass should be sufficient on the back-weld.
Frankly, done right, no back-weld should be needed, but I guess that's how it's done in the tests. Grind flush, then edge-grind a groove you can follow no more than 3/32 deep.
WFS and volts depends on wire size, and what gas mix (or no gas mix).
Too many variables in your question.
The devil is in the details.

There's no gap at all and no backing strap the instructor told us to grind a grove and it was over an 1/8 deep and he said fill it up all the way with one pass. It 80/20 gas and .045 wire

Okay,
1/2" plate carbon steel. I assume the front side is beveled?
Then you grind the back side and weld again? I recommended 3/32, but it sounds like 1/8" is preferred?
So, what was your question?
How to set the machine? Why would it be different than on the front side?
It sounds to me like you know the answers, but don't feel confident because of the x-ray.
X-ray is an easier test than it sounds. It's easier than a bend test. Keep it clean, and avoid start/stops.

I'd set the machine at 25 volts and 300 ipm.
40cfh on the gas.
Hold a tight stickout, and have your gun pointing straight into the joint.
And just move steady.
Wire wheel between passes, and you should be able to pass xray no problem.

Just a couple welders and a couple of big hammers and torches.
