Trying to build a support for an axle to rest on for a garden cart. The top piece of the support is 30 inch in length and 3 inch wide. The legs I am try to weld on to this are only 7/8 inch tall. I am trying to keep a 90 degree angle using a welders magnet. The material is 1/8 mild steel. My tack welds are on the outside of the joint only. I've only done one leg and stopped. The leg turned in Ward so I don't have that 90 degree angle left. Any advice would be much appreciated.

You may need to tack a cross brace to the other side of the legs to hold them in position while you tack it up after that you can grind off and remove the cross brace.

learning to control distortion is certainly interesting. i was having that hell the other week.

bracing can help. also balancing the welds, ie weld both sides. or connect two taps together with a cross brace so one weld pulls it one way and welding the 2nd pulls it in the opposite direction and straights them out. or use angle iron instead of a flat for making a tab so it has its own built in brace. or heat it up and bend it back into place after.
