Welding Tips and Tricks

Anyone ever use this for Tig welding? My local suppler has some bottles they want me to try and give some feedback about (at a cost to me). I cant find what gasses it is made up of. Argon for sure but they could not tell me what else. If its just a Ar-He mix than its no different than another mixed you can get. My work is split between stainless and aluminum. They could not tell me if it would be ok to use on stainless. Thanks

I tried looking up the MSDS: must be pretty new, because even the Praxair site doesn't have the MSDS for it. For MIG they have various mixtures of argon / oxygen and argon / co2, but nothing that looks like the MSDS for a TIG shielding gas.

I'd throw the question back at the sales guys: tell them your company needs to see the MSDS before you can authorize a PO, and have the Prax sales guys do the legwork.

Glad you found it. I've never heard of nitrous oxide as part of a shielding gas... I have some AWS reference manuals at home, I'll look it up later.

I found a Praxair patent application online:

The patent indicates the gas works well on aluminum, but does not mention stainless steel.

"[0008] According to this invention, improved welding gas compositions are provided for use as shielding gases in electric arc welding processes. The present shielding gas compositions have been found to improve both qualitative and quantitative weld characteristics when welding an aluminum or aluminum alloy containing work piece to a second work piece, preferably in a GTAW or GMAW process. The use of the present shielding gas compositions containing oxygen and nitrous oxide and/or nitrogen at the claimed levels have been found to provide the surprising combination of good bead weld appearance, improved wetting, enhanced weld penetration, and reduced arc etch zone. The use of the two-active gas composition provides superior results as compared to the use of either active alone."

Thanks for the info. Just got off the phone with an area "gas mixtures specialist" not recommend because of the oxygen content for Tig welding. Ill get a bottle to do my aluminum work and pure argon for the rest. Ill do a review once i have tried it and see how it compares to a helium argon mix.
