Aluminized exhaust pipe...

Well, After reading a bunch of bad things about TIG welding aluminized exhaust pipe, I decided to give it a try. Bare with me about the welding, I'm at the wheel since a few weeks only..

From what I see, it turned out ok.. Just a quick scotch bright and no filler, just fused the pipe.. I used 1/16 Tung 2% lanth. with stubby gas lens, #7 @ 100amp with the pedal.

Questions are , Will the weld will be heat resistant ( for an exhaust pipe ) ? And the black we see both sides, is the coating burning ?

First picture has been clean with a brass brush.. second one is bare, after welding

thanks for the hints.
Marc

Why not mig it?

why not answering the questions ? If I had wanted to MIG it, I would have done it.

Motox,

I agree with you, but I don't understand this kind of answer.. I try to be clear, with all the details I can, to avoid confusion and get the most 'directed' answer..

Marc,

The short form is, you did fine, and that looks good for what you were doing.

The long form is, if you look at the depression in your weld, you could add some filler metal. This doesn't so much "add strength" as "remove weakness"... Each place you've welded that seems "sunk in" is now a weak spot in your system. Filling it back up eliminates that.

Oh, and, Marc,

John (AKWeldshop) asked, "why not MIG it?" because that's how he would choose to do it, and was sincerely interested in why you chose TIG.

This forum doesn't "posture" on method... He was actually curious.

Mig is a great way to do it.

Hot and fast.

Like so..   ;) ;) ;) :) :) :) :D :D

And mig would result in less of the coating burning off. The (yours) weld will be fine for an exhaust.

It's really easy to do as well.....

Wow....is it a full moon or what? Its a fricken exhaust pipe for cryin out loud. The weld will hold up. Most people don't realize the most damage of an exhaust system comes from not letting your vehicle get hot and vaporize and remove the vapor that comes from hot air passing thru a cold pipe, not to mention the water vapor that is generated from burning fossil fuel. AKweldshop asked a good question...chill with the attitudes

Flux core is another good option.

But mig would be the better option.....

And when welding on an exhaust you do not need a welding helmet.....

You can even use flux core on stainless.

Very versatile.

And when welding exhaust pipe, no welding jacket or gloves required....

Ok John, I think we went a little overboard on this one.

RedRotor,
To answer your two SPECIFIC questions, no your weld will not be effected by the heat of the exhaust. Of course that might also depend on there this weld is in relation to a turbo or supercharger.I would have added filler to build up the throat of the weld. I don't feel it will break but again, that will depend on the stress the exhaust will see.
For your second question, I would have to assume that black is in fact the burnt zinc and will not harm anything.

For the little hood time you have, that is a great autogenous weld!

thanks guys for the answers, It was actually only a test and wanted to see the process..

Akweldshop : keep posting the pictures of your MIG work, it's very instructive !
