I have a Dart big m cast iron block that broke a rod. It broke a piece of the oil pan rail out. Does anyone have any pointers on the best way to weld the piece back in. I have the piece that was broke out. Thanks in advance.

That low on the block should be hopefully clear of water jacket / oil ways & not too critical as long as the pan seals - so if I were doing it I'd strip the block - try to re-fit the broken piece with some heavy flat stock bolted across the damaged area - gently sand the casting surface clean / smooth - then V out the crack quite wide & virtually full depth & after a gentle pre-heat - braze the repair with oxy / acet - or if familiar with the process Tig braze it - helps to do a gentle post heat & allow to cool as slowly as possible - if your unable /unwilling to do the hot method & don't want to strip & pre-heat the entire block then stitch it in very small amounts using pure nickel stick weld - I've done both on various blocks mostly on farm stuff & had good results - hardest thing is often getting all the metal / shrapnel out of the oil ways.

Thanks. It's not into oil or water. I'm just trying to make sure I have a good plan before I start. It's a perfect block other than the broke piece. Thanks for the advice.

Some pics would be helpful. Welding on a cast block may not be your best solution. Lock-n-stitch may be a better option.
