Is it ok to weld 304(L) with 316LSI rod?

Yes. Rule of thumb with staino is the filler grade should be equal to or greater than parent metal.

Yes, 316 is fine for 304. The higher grade rule of thumb has a few caveats to be aware of, though. A 400-series filler is a chemically different steel, for example. 400s are primarily Martinsitic, if I recall corrrectly. 300s are primarily Austinitic. This leads to the next caveat; 308 and 316 filler are designed to leave a residual ferrite in the weld to prevent hot-cracking. Using 312 or 347, with 347 being fully austinitic, requires special care to avoid cracking of the weld.
