Welding different thicknesses?????????

I have some questions about my next project.

I need to weld threaded bungs into the ends of 4130 tubing.

The tubes are rather thin and the bungs rather thick.

Would I set the machine so I can get the bungs to puddle and then back off to puddle the tubes to weld them together?

Any tips or advise would be apprecitaed.

Thanks

Bill

Keep most of the heat on the thicker piece. Blend the puddle slow and feed the rod to compinsate the over heat on the thinner material. Basically puddle up on the thicker stuff the creep over the thinner stuff dropping the rod as needed. the 2nd pass should be a bit easier. hope this helps.

That's pretty much what I thought but I guess I just needed verification for someone more experienced.

The tubes are only about .030 -.040 thick so I don;t think it will require more than one pass.

Some times in that situation I also like to run a hot bead on the thicker peice(not conecting the two) then on the thinner peice setting my machine on a lower setting, then making another pass to connect the bead from the thicker metal, to the bead i am presently welding on the thinner metel. It works for me anyway.
