My understanding is that welding castiron with alumabronze is a very machineable weld.
I have been trying it and it make a beautiful weld and very strong but I can't even drill or
tap threads in it.
What am I doing wrong?

it could be that you are allowing it to cool too quickly are you putting the piece into some sand or oildry or something to slow the cooling rate? if not the weld may very well come out hard as nails but brittle. just my $0.02

I thought Jody might have some imput on this as I see in his presentation he is welding large cast iron parts. I am also welding large pieces and can't submerge them, although I am wraping them in a welding blanket.
Any other ideas?

Maybe try pre heating and post heating along with the welding blanket.
