CK no.12 Pyrex to 17 torch

Hey guys,

Before I start I know Jodi sells the FUPA no 12 kits in the store with an adaptor for a 17/26, however being in Australia the cost of getting one here with our dollar and shipping I just could not justify the cost vs how much I would use it.

I know he also stocks CK stuff I found out after this little project they do a no.12 straight to 17/26. Maybe he can look at stocking them over in USA land for you guys if there is enough interest.

He is pretty thrifty at making things work so i'm sure he won't mind.

Anyway, happened to go past the LWS on my way home yesterday and saw a CK kit for a good price, and couldn't resist any more. problem is it was 5/16 24 thread instead of whatever the bigger thread in the 17 I have. So i figured I would make it work somehow and here's what I came up with, pretty straightforward really.

Not sure what insulator that is but I have heaps not doing anything, also need a 6.9mm drill, 5/16 UNF tap and a normal collet body.

Drill to 6.9....

Tap it 20mm or so...

And part it off at a length of 10mm. This is kinda important as you need the thread not to bottom out before the insulator and cup go tight and the right length for the collet to go tight with the back cap in roughly the right spot. 10mm seemed perfect.

Bit of high temp loctight so the piece doesn't end up in the torch

Hey presto, all done.

I leak tested the insulator to cup connection with some soapy water and even with it a turn or two loose, no leaks. Looking forward to using this bad boy. Will post some results.....Anyone use one? What gas rate are you using? I was thinking 20cfh/10lpm under normal circumstances.

Nice but l wonder if the torch temperature exceeds the release temperature of the loctite.

It may do but the worst thing that could happen is my reducer gets stuck in the torch and I have to use plyers to get it out. I think these are 120amps max and not meant to be used on A/C. Given that I will be on 70max welding delicate stuff and taking my time with the torch a fair way from the arc I don't think it will get hot at all...time will tell.

Time will tell...

Did a search and rubber melts at about 180c ..not sure if torches are a special kind of material but that loctite at 230c should be right....over thinking it now!

Hats off to you, sweet job making that set-up work. I use the CK jumbo gas Saver 1-1/18" cup with my sanitary piping, run 25-30cfh.

I will say if you can get your hands on a FUPA the results are amazing, ;)

Yeah mate, was BOC, must have just got them as I've never seen them before.

Gave it a crack on some thick stuff I had at 30cfh and results were a bit underwhelming compared to what I can do with a 6 stubby. Wasn't quite in the groove, have to see when I get my hands on some 1.6mm

It's not the best hearing the gas hissing out with the prices here in Aus! This might become a novelty item in the box, haha.

Probably a conspiracy by the BOC Axis of Evil - they sell you a cup that gushes argon...they sell the argon...hmmm.

But good to know that they maybe have some CK stuff now. I'll have to get over to BOC for a look. Normally I have just a quick glance through their gear before getting a nosebleed from the prices and bolting like mad.

Hahaha, classic. Yeah that and I find BOC/Supagas have shithouse service and range unless all you want is some argon. They don't really know what they are selling. I suppose the people who know welding are welding and not working in a shop, just the way it is.

I have a more specialised welding shop who are a bit better with range so barely go to the big names for anything but has.

I thought they must have made a mistake on the price because it was roughly half of what I could get it elsewhere. They tried to tell me it would fit a 17.....even said series 2 on the pack....
