Tig welding tips, questions, equipment, applications, instructions, techniques, tig welding machines, troubleshooting tig welding process
This is a project that I spent all last winter and spring on. If I only had the boat in the back yard. This was my first go at 316 stainless. That stuff is alive when you heat it up. I'm just a backyard hack and every louse thing I touch is a learning experience. I think I got it and the next project will go easier.

Your own boat, yes Dave?
If you want to take a look at some awesome aluminium fabrication for boating applications, just search out some of TamJeff's posts. The guy is a genius.

Still lookin for the roll holder
Yeah, glad it is done and installed, no one will appreciate the amount of work that went into that thing, the welding and frame was easy, those doors, latches, locks and hardware all took longer. I have about 30-33 hours in it and less then $1000 in material, hoist and latches, handles in the entire thing, outside contractor quoted $7700 with us suppling the lexan and hardware...I say I saved the company a a$$ load of money.
....we actually have a electrician that is "vertically challenged" we kept telling people it was his new office.

Little alum machine part repair...
It was nice to weld something other then stainless...lol even if it was some dirty, coated aluminum.

It's 5/16" plate, I grooved out both sides...once I welded the front I grooved down until I hit my weld, then welded the other side up...she's solid now.motox wrote:rick
did you have to do any welding on the back side?

Not sure on amps, I had machine set to 250 and was using the pedal, when it puddled I dabbled 3/32" filler

Probably could have gotten away with just once side, but figured what the hell..lol The part never had a gusset and we use to snap the 3/4" wide legs off about every 3 months. I welded the original gusset about 4 years ago, and we haven't broken an arm since. They mangled the one that was on there so I finally repaired this spare to replace the assembly, hope it lasts another 4 years.

Pretty welds there Rick. Looks like it behaved itself for you too. Never welded 303...any different from 304 or 316? Why the hell does your plant have that laying around anyway? Do you guys machine parts there?

Rick, could have fooled me, looks like 304, I typically use 312 filler for 303. Below is an experiment I did some years back, the tube is 304 and the hex is 303, don't remember the filler but you can see the exaggerated undercut on the 303, it's as if the filler is trying to get away from the 303.Rick_H wrote: Here's some 303 (un weldable stainless, used 309l wire)

Yes we do machine parts here as well, put we had one of our MRO suppliers that brought in 303 instead of 304 by mistake, so we have a few pieces of it in flat bar left around.exnailpounder wrote:Pretty welds there Rick. Rich-This actually behaved much better then it has in the past. It is not as bright as the 304 we typically stock, I've had it wear it barely welds at all...pisses you off a good bit. I was always told 309L with 303 to another metal...yeah that is pretty bad for sure, it does look like it doesn't want to mesh.

Just a repair on a shelf they toss some bags and small drums of ingredients on before mixing/blending. The shelves only have one small piece of flat bar underneath and they keep flexing and breaking. So I decided to add some 1" x 1" square tube across the shelf to add some rigidity to it....works perfect. Also allowed me to straighten the shelves out.
