Hey guys. Well I was trying to make a cover out of some 402 bursh stainless with plastic cover on it. The material is 16 gauge. Welded one seam up and it turn out like crap, so I scrapped it and formed up a new one. The weld was not crusty but was really discolored. I used 316L .035 rod, number 7 defuser, 3/32 2 percent thoriated tungsten, 15 on the regulator and the machine was set to 120 but was not welding full pedal. I don't weld a lot of stainless but never had this much discoloration in the past when welding 300 series stainless. Is the 316 even the right rod, I also have 308? Does 402 not weld as nice as 300 series?
