Had to chop out a couple of 3" refrigeration ammonia stop valves and replace with stop/check valves.
The replacement valves were shorter in both dimensions so the first job was to weld on pups.
Left hand valve welded in.
Setting right hand valve in position and adjusting gap.
All welded out.

If welding on a vessel we purge for 10min with nitrogen. If pipework first we pump it down to a bit of vacuum then break with air and get into it. If there is oil present (often) it will have disolved ammonia which gases out into the weld and welder. This is where inexperienced welders put on their skirts and run away screeming. I've been sucking it for 35 years as a fridgy and since I've been welding I get calls from all over for crap jobs nobody wants to touch. Is this a niche? Anyway you don't want ammonia in your welds. This happens when valves don't hold - it happens. The arc and gas shield glows green like the hulk, the tungsten starts to disappear and you get severe porosity in your weld. Alot of cursing happens about this time. To seal off a butt we weld a socket on the pipe upstream from the joint to let pressure and flow out while we complete the butt and then screw a plug or valve into the socket.
I watched a mate of mine weld a 12" leg into the underside of a horizontal vessel with oil and ammonia running out through the joint. He used 5p for root and 7016 out. That joint got xray ultrasonic and mag particle and passed all. Awesome job. Gobsmacked.

Nice work, as usual, Zank!
Nothing special here... I am trying out a new camera. It's a bit of a cheapie, but it doesn't have 30 features I'll never use.
Just some basic pipe fab. First pic in standard mode, second in "macro" for close-ups. We'll see how they come through on the forum.
