hey guys

im keen to have a go at doing a stainless steel exhaust
the thing that is confussing as ive looked around some people just fuse the joints, others fuse and then go over with filler after its cooled down
and some do it one pass with filler.

whats the best way to do it?

thanks

I prefer to do the one pass with filler when I do thin walled stuff. If you go without it seems to thin the metal at the weld too much and makes it prone to vibration failure in the near future. But thats just me, Youre mileage may vary depending on your techniques and ability. I'm not a great or even really talented Tig weldor so I have to use as many tricks and crutches as I can to get a good quality job. Is the appearance important to you or are you just looking for integrity, makes a big difference in your initial approach and process selection. Hope this helps point you in an answer finding direction.

I would reccomend adding filler metal. Without it, the weld will eventually fail. In fact all weld will eventually given enough time. So with that in mind, it would be ideal to add as much filler metal as is reasonable and possible in a practical way.

Also, this might help a bit:
