I'm not a pro when it comes to Aluminum by any means....Stick, MIG and a fair amount of Low carbon Steel and Stainless TIG....but not a lot of Aluminum, especially motor cases.
Just picked up a Dynasty 200 DX. A friend heard I got it and wants to weld a cracked Harley case. I’ve done some cases before with another Miller machine. I've been reading the web site and forum quite a bit for any tips....lots of great info here, for sure. Anyway....I'm looking for any tips I can get as to the set up for the machine. I've downloaded the Miller Owners Manual for this model and read the suggested set up and I read all Main Topics on Aluminum Welding off of the Home Page.
I'm aware of keeping my gas low (not to low or high 12-15cfh) and small cup size....preheat (300-350) or blackening with acyelene...also preheat passes......the 3 C's.......I’ll gouge the crack with Carbide Burrs for aluminum.....torch angle and round tip....not balled or sharpened.....I will bolt the Case half to a surface ground 3/4" plate I made just for doing this in the hopes of eliminating any warpage......and I’ll wrap in heat blanket when finished to slow cool, hopefully avoiding any cracking. Anything else ???
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Ps……found some Tungsten rod in my TIG stuff last night with a Gold band. Is this Lanthanum ???
