Hi All,
I have recently commissioned a 6m simple aluminium structure to be made by a local fabrication company. It consists of 5 25mm alu rolled boxes sections welded together for for skeletal halo ring. The ring is suspended from ceiling and all up weight of 200KG.
My concern and reason for the post is quality and strength of the welding done. Please also not that it will be hung over a car valued at 200 GBP +
Professional comments welcomed

Regards

J

J,

I wouldn't hang that over my doghouse. These folks should not have taken a job they had no knowledge or skills in. Even if the "ugly" is concealed, I'd have to test it to 4X it's weight before I'd trust to walk under it.

J,
If you've looked around this site you've seen what suitable welds on Aluminum should look like. Those are not suitable for your application. Please don't hang that over your car. I would suggest having the builder hang it over his wife's car. Ask for your money back and find a shop that does Aluminum welding daily.

Looking at the pictures, I would assume that they used GMAW (MIG) and they probably should have used GTAW (TIG) to produce a much better weld in this situation.

Len,

I was under the impression from the stuck rod-butt that they DID try GTAW with no idea how to do it.

Scary.

I thought it looked like a piece of MIG wire that they cut off after it stuck there. Scary looking welds either way.

Yeah,
That's terrible....

Don't even tough it, it might fall apart.
Just a couple welders and a couple of big hammers and torches.

Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it.
