Tig welding tips, questions, equipment, applications, instructions, techniques, tig welding machines, troubleshooting tig welding process
Hi, guys, new here. I recently was given an old TIG welder to use as back up when my Miller was in the shop. It is a "Real Gear" TIG 200. AC/DC, inverter (I believe) welder. It has a bunch of symbols on the control panel, that I'm not familiar with. Is there a resource to decipher them? I can post a picture later, if someone can walk me through how to post one. I can't get the welder to weld continuously, at this point, but it does strike an arc, flow gas, and hi Freq seems to work. But it only welds for a few seconds and shuts off the arc. I dont' know if I have the controls set right, because there are no words on the control panel. And this is my first time with an inverter, so it's got more controls toggles than I'm used to!

Starting at the upper left, the big knob with the A and the waveform with the bold top is Amps. 10 = 200A and 0 = whatever the lowest setting of the machine is, probably 10-20 or so.
Next row, Ac Balance. That's how much time the waveform is Ep vs En (Positive or Negative, and only applies to AC).
Pulse Speed is just that, how many pulses per second, and again, they just have 1-10 scales but the actual numbers range probably from 1 or 2 up to 200.
The next two knobs I can't see the symbols. Need a better pic.
Not sure about the first switch but it might be Stick mode or Tig mode. Difficult to say. Might also be for telling the unit to be EP or EN....
Next is pretty obvious, AC/DC
2T or 4T, has to do with what control you're using. Here's a link to a better explanation than I can type.

The last switch is (I'm pretty sure) for what type of waveform you want. Might also control Straight current vs Pulse vs whatever... You have a pulse freq knob, but there's also got to be a switch for turning that on/off. Looks like this one is 3 positions.
I hope I have them all correct. Need another pic though.

Looks like you can get a PDF manual online, but you might need to enter an email address, which I'm not doing with mine. But you're welcome to download it yourself.

OK, got a better pic. The welder seems to do Dc on stainless pretty well, so now I'd like to try it on aluminum.
Any ideas on what the 2 setting on the right are for?

pre flow 0.3s post flow 2.4s min and optimum 3.6s you can do less but your wolfram will be black if you do less then 2.4s but you can save your gas ..BugHunter wrote:The two knobs I couldn't see before (on the right) are pre-flow and post-flow. Sets how long before and after the arc you get gas.
