Hi from New Zealand,
I have a General Electric T-58-8b gas turbine engine in my garage that I'm in the process of fitting into a speedboat.
The engine is a left-hand engine from a 'SeaKing' helicopter from the late 60's.
In order to mount the engine in the boat successfully, the power turbine/exhaust housing needs to be rotated 90 degrees to face upwards. Aside from rotating the casing and internal components to satisfy the requirements of the oil system, there are a couple of fittings on the exhaust casing that I need to relocate.
From what I have read in the maintenance manuals for this engine, the casing is likely AMS-5541 'Inconel W' ?? while the fittings I will be moving are likely Hastelloy X or W. ??
Question - what would be the suggested TIG filler to re-weld these materials?
Also, is it possible to add some additional fittings that are 304 or 316 Stainless to the Inconel successfully?
These fittings are not load-bearing or exposed to temperatures above ~600degC.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure there are some welders among this forum that have personally welded old gas turbines in their career.
Look forward to posting pictures of this project as I go
Thanks!
Elmo

If they are Hastelloy-W or -X, just get yourself some of that filler rod. Not difficult to find. There is Hastelloy-W on Ebay right now. $43/lb. I've ordered from weldwire.net. 1/16" Hast-W (ERNiMo-3) is about $45/lb but that was 3 years ago. They also have Hast-X (ERNiCrMo-2) but I don't remember the pricing.

Thanks for the input guys, it is much appreciated
Looking at the data sheet for ERNiCrMo-3, it is suitable for joining dissimilar metals such as Hastelloy and Inconel and stainless also. It might be the go-to for this job.
Cheers

BTW, ERNiCrMo-3 is Inconel-625 as it's otherwise known. I've used it to TIG plain ol' mild steel as well.

So Hastelloy W and Inconel 625 are the same thing, going by what you were saying above... or am I confused?

My apologies, I missed the 'Cr' in the InconelOscar wrote:Confused.StoksStandard wrote:So Hastelloy W and Inconel 625 are the same thing, going by what you were saying above... or am I confused?
ERNiCrMo-3 is Inconel 625
ERNiMo-3 ie Hastelloy-W
Thanks again for your input
