Is it possible to weld stainless steel to mild steel using 308 rod? if not, is there anyway to join stainless and mild steel?
The scenario I'm in is welding two peices of pipe, abot 2 inches in diameter, 3/16's thick, one peice being stainless the other being mild steel? Is this possible? I was told it was, but I am doubtfull of this guys advice/knowledge.

309 is the most commonly used filler for welding carbon to stainless. and is good to have on hand when porosity rares its head on carbon steel.
for some non critical apps, 308 will work....but I would use 309

Thanks, thats really cool, I always thought before that the only way to join non-similer metals was orbital welding.
Learn something every day I guess

309 has a closer carbon content to mild steel.
