My 3 stringer cap... Thoughts??

Skillets,
I think you are getting it. In the first picture of your root, try a tighter whip. See how your ripples are wide spaced? Tighten up your whip and it should/will look smoother and burn in deeper. The catch is go to slow and you will heat up and key hole out of control.
On your three stringer cap, looks good! If you want picky, work on consistency. This will come in time. I think you are doing fine. Some thoughts........

Practice, practice, practice....

All about steady with 7018, tight arc, and good rod angle.

Not to mention good rods and good machine....

What amerage you running on the 7018???

Horizontal, I like 110amps, rod pointed up 15-20deg, 0deg travel angle....
Just me....
Any hotter than 115amps and it will droop.
Look at my welds on this hitch.... Starting here. not pipe, but think of it as 12in 2g pipe.
Same specs as above.

AK,

They were 3/32 7018 and I ran them at 94.
Rod pointed up about 10deg and a 5deg travel angle...

Jon,

That's the problem I was having. My keyhole would get out of control. I I believe it was my gap. It was a little bit more then 1/8 in. Which made it hard for me to control.

What gap do u like to weld with? Also, what Amps would u burn 1/8 6011? And do u whip or do u drag?

Ok,
I'm speaking 1/8....

But for 3/32, tho I don't burn a ton of them, The puddle is not as big, and has less of a tendency to droop.
Those look good.

I just don't run a lot of 3/32's....

When you get to 6g, here's Jody's vid on it.

Skillets,
There are two things that can attribute to your key hole blowing out. One is the gap and the other is your amps. I have not run 6011 for a while but I "think" it was in the 70-80 amp range, but I could be wrong. Being that 6011 is like 6010, you can do either whip or drag. I mainly whip. You can also try to hold a tighter arc and see how you like that.
Personally I prefer a 3/32 gap and use a whip/keyhole technique. I feel this takes my gap up to 1/8". If the gap is 1/8" I will drag in the gap and reduce the amps.
Here is a video from Jody on 6011, although it is vertical up.

I'm guessing your using a DC machine??
Just from how good the 7018 looks. :D

I would recommend getting ing some 1/8 lincoln 5p+ rods....
I used to run a fair amout of 6011 on AC, but when I first ran 6010 5p+ on DC, it was way smoother....

If you are indeed using a DC machine, I would recommend getting some 6010.
