Hello All,
I am little bit confused on selecting the filler material for repairing (filling up the cavity area) on the hydro turbine runner made up of GX4CrNi 13/4 material. The choice opted is 309. But when i see the chromium/nickel content is high for it than the base material of 13/4. Most of the repairing companies opt for this 309 for this kind of application
Kindly let me know what is the basis for selecting matched filler for this kind of application ? Are there any rules governing this ?

Thanks

I would recommend emailing or calling a filler metal manufacturer like Harris. If it’s a high Chrome it may need something like inconel or 312. They would know for sure. Also most high chrome metals require carful watch on the preheat and post heat.
I have more questions than answers

Josh
