You can go to Alaska and live with John, he has all kinds of good welders and you can learn on them. Problem solved.

P.S. while you're living with John, hide the jumper cables and don't eat the Mcnuggets.

mbmalone wrote:That's exactly what I found out and my beads suffer badly. I never used it on AC, but I'll remember about the AC if I have to do a big project. I have to perfect my DC welding skills so I can get a job and move to Alaska and wilderness.
Well, truth is that practicing on AC will still give you valuable hood time - and you'll need to burn rod after rod for hours on end to get really good.
If you buy 7018AC rods you can run your machine on AC and it won't get hot nearly as fast - then you'll get more practice.
Adjusting your technique for DC later will be super easy if you get good on 7018AC rods.

I don't know what happened to his invertec V350-Pro, but it looks like he's now using a WS-ARC160 from Guangdong China that looks like a lunch box?

I want to see that sucker running some 6010 vertical

BTW,
That Esab miniarc 161 has an arc that can compare to any stick welder!!!!
Burns 7018 and 6010 as smooth as any Invertec!

On 115v too!!!!

And your crazy 125/225 buzzbox, can't even weld!!
I'll bet my hat its made in china too!!!!

Keep your china/usa opinions to yourself.

That invertec was screwed up before it arrived and that royally sucks.

I'll never buy one of these Lincoln Tombstones after having used one and becoming frustrated. I guess that's why the only time I see videos of them being used to weld, it's always showing the A/C model. I saw someone had added an additional 120v computer fan to theirs and it had improved the duty cycle. This welder is not good for running beads, except on A/C.

It works better with 7018's than with 6010's which seem to quickly fatigue the welder. It works good when it's cold, in the flat position.

I wanted to get an Everlast because of Jody, but now I will also have to take a look at ESAB.
I can't afford the power of Blue.

I didn't know why you got so mad?
I would weld on a chinese welder, if I had one ... unless it was from HF.

I found this, I think he just reduced it but it's 900 lbs. I don't have children to pass it down to, just need it to pay for itself.

I found a vintage Dialarc® 250 AC/DC for $200 @ 2 1/2hrs away.
I don't know if that would be a deal or not?

I don't need the same problem I'm already having.
MinnesotaDave wrote: Yeah those little guys get hot real fast on DC.

But on AC you can run a real long time around 125-135 amps..

Dialarcs are excellent industrial machines - welded with several of them and own a 1979 - 365 lbs.

Try it out before you take it home and you'll see what I mean.
Current new price for one is $2,300 btw - they are a REAL welder :D

The big Airco/miller you found is the same as my avatar - awesome machine but at 900 lbs it's hard to take with you.

I didn't realize your avatar was an Airco, but I noticed they dropped the price today. Would I need to be afraid of my electric meter spinning like a Las Vegas slot machine on single phase? 900lbs is a big problem. http://neworleans.craigslist.org/tls/4538071853.html

Is that Dialarc a good deal?

Since it goes up to 460 amps, it needs 100 amps to get there.

But I run mine on a 60 amp circuit and it happily tigs aluminum at 230 amps AC.
It doesn't use any more juice than the Dialarc would at similar welding amperages - just has a higher top end so needs juice to get there.

I also have a 60A circuit. What I need is an old beat-up Chinese welder, but you can't find one in that condition that still works :D
The Dialarc is so much heavier than the tombstone?

I wouldn't need more than 95A-120A for what I'm doing.

My friend Kenny just turned 50 He's used the same tombstone since maybe age 5. Most of his welds are on big construction machines, bulldozers, and excavators. His welds look like robotics. I think one secret is practice, perhaps 20,000 hours. He swears by a rod called 80TAC+.
Myself, I switch between that and 7018, using 7018 mostly when I have a bigger project when fresh rod is feasible.

Yep, the Dialarc is an industrial machine and has huge duty cycle compared to homeowner machines.
Power and duty cycle = weight on old machines.
You can burn all day, rod after rod, and not slow down. Dialarc to Tombstone is not even a comparison.
(Referring to the homeowner machine, not the Idealarc round top version)

This is the chart for my '79 Dialarc.

Maybe I will offer them $200
http://neworleans.craigslist.org/tls/4538071853.html

Any more than $200 and it would seem better for me to continue saving for a chinese inverter, especially since I don't have children. I would still have to figure a way to get the welder from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. Maybe now, it's only worth $150. I sure would like to learn to TIG and have a good stick welder. I can't find a vintage DialArc around here.
