hooked up stick torch to 250. rounded up 3 7018"s from
generous welding buddy.
thought it would be like riding a bike you know younever forget.
well yes it was but the bike had only one wheel...
here are the beads i managed to do today.
DCEP arch control 50 1/4 " plate
still working on double hookup

i liked the rod but finding a comfortable
position to steady was difficult.
its a little tricky restarting the rod too but
figured that out.
i will order a box of 7018 and make a serious
attempt at it soon.

I should add,
One machine I use at work has a 25' water-cooled torch, with a 50' extension on it, so I have a 75' water-cooled torch. I've worked with teams that had 200' of lead on their water-cooled torches.
W/C can be extended to any length your pump will support.

craig, one nice thing about the 7018s is they are essentially a drag rod. I find that makes it easier to weld with these, I just drag the flux on the plate and focus on rod angle/drag speed. I find for me it makes propping not quite as important. Could be that I am doing it wrong though

i needed to do something about fumes
while trying to remember how to stick weld.
prob not OSHA approved but easy to remove...

Oh yeah, I am sure you don't want to breath a lot of that stuff. when I use 7018, I throw open the garage doors, and I have a pedestal floor fan at my back, pushing the fumes out the door. if the wind ends up pushing it back at me, I revert to a respirator.

7018 works great as a drag rod in the flat and (fair in the) horizontal positions, but to do a vertical up or an overhead, it should be pushed.
Don't rely on 7018's ability to be dragged, as someday you'll have to do it another way.
