It's because he's using a big weave.
In high school and almost all welding videos, everyone uses a weave.
But at school now, they don't want to see any weave.
I'm getting better on my overhead. Have to test out tonight.
My normal machine was messing up, so I tried another, and it was messing up also. Notice the amperage below.

Well the first machine just never seemed right to me.
A lot of spatter, seemed like it wanted to stick a lot, and when striking it would either stick real quick or almost like the machine would go off.
Even one of the instructors used it for a demo and basically said it was a pos. Lol
