Say you have a 7018 rod now I can break that down and tell you what each number means, now I saw this and was hopeing someone could help me out, what is downhill api 1104 welding with 5pt for root pass, 70t for hot pass and 8pt for filler pass. I know what downhill welding is but sketchy on the api 1104 and I know what the root,hot andd filler passes are but not number letter combo's. Thank you for your help

5p is the root bead 70t is 7010 same as 6010 just higher tensile,8010 just higher tensile it may just be for testing to qualify you for all 3 filler metals but who really knows contractors tweak tests all the time to see if guys can really weld

API 1104 is the code that governs cross country gas line welding and allows downhill welding.
It's not 5pt or 70t or 8pt. It is as follows;
5p+ for the first pass (root)
70+ for the 2nd pass (hot pass)
8p+ for the filler pass and final cap pass
Those are Lincoln brand designations. 5p+ is a mild steel rod with a cellulosic flux. 70+ and 8+ are a low alloy rod with a cellulosic flux

Huh, thata really interesting i never knew all that. I have also never seen a 7010 or 8010 rod. I'm guessing that they are both more fkuid like then 6010, or somewhat similer to 7018 and 8018. Can anyone offer a comparison?
