Welding Certification test Q&A and tips and tricks

For those of you that have taken the 7018 certification test what diameter electrode did you guys use for the root? I've had trouble doing a root with a 1/8. I can easily do a root with a 3/32 though.
What position/thickness/bevel angle/gap are you using. The AWS D1.1 allows for quite a bit of movement.
I have used 1/8 in all positions and 3/32 was allowed in the 3G. I gaped the plates a somewhere between 3/8 and 1/4 inch so 1/8 is a bit easier to fill the root. I think 3/32 is a bit safer in terms of making sure you burn into the corners.
