I did this quite a while ago.
Used 3 different welders, and 3 different brands of 7018.
Those plates were 3" flat bar and had my CWI friend throw them on his track torch.
Cleaned the plates off with a flap disk.....
Pics should finish the story.
John
As far as amps, anywhere from 100-120....
All stringers.....

Just a couple welders and a couple of big hammers and torches.

Dirty jeans? Dirty nails, too!
It takes a week's vacation for me to have clean nails, and it somehow feels wrong...
Nice bends!

Nice work! All through the 1990's I was a confirmed stringer guy and would run stringers rather than a weave unless the WPS called for it. Now, I prefer a weave and don't like running stringers. I don't know why the change, or exactly when it happened, but there it is!AKweldshop wrote:Thanks guys....

For me, there's something in the rhythm of a weave that makes for a more even bead and more consistent fill of the toes. It's also slightly hypnotic, so more relaxing than focusing on keeping stringers even in width and height.
Also, my hands shake a fair bit, so the weave is kind-of working "with" the problem, where stringers seem to work against it.

So are you saying that for you, a weave is some kind of eastern thought, meditative, Zen sort of thing? Do you become 'one' with the weld?Otto Nobedder wrote:For me, there's something in the rhythm of a weave that makes for a more even bead and more consistent fill of the toes. I like running stringer beads you did a great job they are not as easy as people think I will try to post pictures of a 3g but I only have 3/8 steel lying around. I like those rods too I buy them at Colorado compressed gas. And that root pass looked better than mine that's for sure.

Over here on spec work, weaving on downhand runs is illegal.
Stringers only with max width of 9x wire dia.
Vertical up can weave, but limits on width depending upon application. eg. 309 S/S on Manganese is 8mm or 5/16".
