Here's the skinny, took the 4130 6g tube test today. Fusion pass, good but wide in one or two places. Filler pass good color but, didn't cover fusion pass in one place by about 1/32". Wasn't sure if it was underfill or not. After much deliberation, I decided to weld over that quadrant again. It had the crystal / spiderweb look there. Obviously oxidized. This is my only concern. I got 100% root fusion, acceptable weld profile etc. Weld was done on 1" tube, .058 wall, back purged (of course) amps35 - 55 ish Er70s-2 filler .So is crystallizing the filler / 4130 reject material?

The aesthetics will depend on the inspector.

If there is a bend test involved, you should be using er80 rod, if they won't let you use a chrome-moly alloy. er80 comes closer to the tensile strength of the parent metal.

edit:
p.s. I only noticed after I posted that this message was ancient.
