Hey what's up I'm Jordan. Been in the hall now for over 4 years trying to get my certs. Watched a lot of Jodys videos on YouTube and realized this forum existed. So here I am to learn as much as I can before my next test on 2" 6G open root. 6010 root and 7018 out. 1/8" land and gap. I failed the first time I took it a few months back. Passed visual and got sent off only to be looked out with "visual porosity in root". Anyone heard of this? They don't send back the coupon so idk what they seen. Anyways I look forward to learning! Heres a practice.

Hey mate,
Welcome to the show, there are lots of folks on here with the experience to help you out, someone should be along to help you, as not everyone logs on everyday.

Just a couple welders and a couple of big hammers and torches.

Welcome, Monty,
Odds are, "visual porosity in the root" occurred at the edge of a tack, and usually results from a cold start. This is more common if they don't let you grind/taper your tacks, but can happen either way. If you're comfortable running a little hotter, it will help, but the best solution is to start near the middle of your tack so you have a hot, stable arc before you reach the edge and move into to open root again.
As you said, though, without seeing the coupon yourself, it's kind of hard to diagnose, and this is just a guess on my part from past experience.

Thanks Steve! That could very well be what happened. I do grind my start/stops but I have struggled a little with holding and burning through the tack. Sometimes I tend to just start stepping it right away. Thanks for the advice!Otto Nobedder wrote:Welcome, Monty,
