Welding Tips and Tricks

Hello,

Didn't know what else to do, not a welder, but a safety manager and we have a weld shop. they mainly weld rebar to go into concrete, and they Mig weld. I have been getting a lot of finger stick injuries, and have been looking for a better glove as to prevent this, (I know, keep the fingers out of the way). Anyone have ideas of a glove that will handle rebar, not get destroyed, and still stop wire sticks? We have even tried forge welding gloves, they work great till the rebar tears the extra leather off.

I if it's from slipping when tacking, I'd suggest a better fixture and training your welders to hold the gun with both hands on the handle area. If it's from while cleaning the mig shroud, I find that leaving the ball on the end of the wire when cleaning makes if safer to clean. The snip just as you are about to start welding. As gloves go the only thing that might come close is gloves rated for needle stick protection. But I don't think they will work for heat. Maybe wearing those inside the welding gloves.

whiskers from the welding process sounds like the issue. maybe getting the welders to pay more attention to the gun position prior to arc initiation and termination. I don't have any idea about what type of gloves will aid in protection.

Thank you for the responses. Most of the injuries come while holding the rebar with one hand, the gun skips and hits the finger, or they just shoot it into their hand if they are less experienced. Going to try Kevlar lined gloves for a start. Used Rappica Forge Welding gloves, worked great until the rebar shredded the extra protection.

Why not simply use a vise grip to clamp the rebar together? That’s what I’d do after stabbing myself twice.
