Welding Tips and Tricks

I am a beginner welder who has a lot to learn about the craft, I am looking forward to hearing the collective wisdom of this group. I work in the street department in the city in which I live. I have stepped up at work and have been taking on any welding and fabrication projects that need to be addressed at work, nothing big just small projects.
I am also working on a 1963 Ford F100 ratrod project at home in my spare time.
I also enjoy woodworking, photography, mt. biking and backpacking.

I have a Millermatic 35 that I am having weld penetration issues with and would appreciate your wisdom in solving the problem.
