Welding Tips and Tricks

Nice to be here.

I'm a civil engineer by trade, but like to get my hands dirty during weekends. I make knives as a hobby (been at it for the last 10+ years...), and convinced myself that I have a need to weld titanium and martensitic stainless steel as part of that vice. I therefore recently upgraded my 40+ year old oil bath welder to a new R-Tech TIG welder with all the bells and whistles that I can think of... Problem is, I've never welded with a TIG before, and am currently on a very steep learning curve

I will be asking a lot of noob questions, so please be patient and understanding.

If you are going to weld titanium, you need some large cups and possibly a trailer cup for Argon coverage. It is imperative that you shield the Ti from the atmosphere while it’s still hot. If you don’t, it will oxidize badly.

I'm currently still playing with mild steel, but will certainly take your advice regarding the large cups to heart when I start with the titanium, cj737.
