I was just given alot of 36'' filler metal some aluminum, mild steel, and what looks like brass with a flux that is coming off. All of it has rust or is tarnished. Can I save it to use?

Most of it can be cleaned up with scotch brite and then wiped down with rubbing alcohol or a acetone. As long as the rust is just surface deep. If it has flux on it but its crumbling then it will depend on what kind of rod it is. Likely you can clean off the flux and then just get an appropriate flux in a can to use as needed. These rods even if they don't come totally clean will still be good enough for practicing with. Welcome to the forum.

I would use it for hanging wire when I paint stuff.
Compared to other expenses, standard filler rod is too cheap to use corroded rods.
In my opinion that is.
