Hello all, just starting out here on the forum. I've been watching Jody's videos for about a year now and finally took the plunge to head over here. I've dabbled in welding on and off for about 30 years now. Wouldn't call myself anything more than a hobbyist, but thinking about maybe getting into it even more. I started out on a Lincoln 225 buzz box, way back, then moved to a Linde V160 MIG, which I still use today. My interest has been picking up in TIG and I just picked up a miller Maxstar 140 this past weekend to learn on. Looking to work some steel and aluminum with it, but really don't have anything but learning in mind for the next few months anyway. Heck, got to start somewhere.
Thanks to Jody for all the videos, the forum, the store and for dragging me back in to do more with what I have. Can't wait to dive in deeper.
Thanks,
Marc

marc,
Welcome to the forum.
I believe that the Maxstar140 will only weld on DC and therefore it's not going to be something you can weld Aluminum with. They do a fine job on steel of any sort up to it's amperage limits. If Aluminum welding is your goal then an AC machine is what you need.

Hi Len and Mike,
Thank you for the welcome, sorry for the late response, life sometimes deals some strange turns. Finally was able to purchase an Argon bottle, some rod and electrodes yesterday, so i haven't even struck the first arc yet.
Len, thanks for the info on the aluminum and you are correct, to both my disappointment and glee all at the same time. Looks like I'll have to just learn on steel and then have to get a new machine. Darn it! HA HA HA
Thanks,
Marc

Rocket,
There should be lots of tig welders in that area, the company I work for has a facility there that builds cold boxes for LNG plants as well as cold boxes for our air separation plants. I know they even list job opening for welders there on occasion on the website.
It's nice in that area as long as you're not driving a truck.
