Looking at welding tables (and parts thereof) one (extra cost) option is "nitriding" - as in extra money for a table with nitrided table slats.

What does this do? How valuable is it? How does it compare with a table top made of cast iron?

I think it's merely corrosion protection. Maybe I'm wrong. Depends if are simply arc welding on it, or intend to have an oxy torch in the area. Using a flame causes a lot of condensation on surfaces, hence corrosion.

I'm pretty sure nitriding is a hardening process (case hardening actually).

Indeed, you are correct. Not sure what I was thinking of, maybe phosphating or something. Image
