Making a rotary welding positioner

So recently I was able to purchase a 18 inch lathe face plate and 12 in 4 jaw chuck for 125 bucks. I really want to make my own heavy duty rotary welding positioner. My big question is what have you guys done for the motor and gearing? I'm thinking along the lines of an Ac motor with a VFD, but I would also like to incorporate a foot pedal and possibly a speed dial. Has anyone here done anything like that? Pictures would be much appreciated.
I am certain I could make a heavy duty positioner cheaper than I could buy a light duty positioner.
