Many years ago my son, a child used sometimes the wrong word. I walked into the house, yelled to my wife upstairs, and asked her to toss down my watch. When she did, I missed, and cracked the crystal.
My son went off to the babysitter. Three days later, I was working 25 miles from home, the customer said; "I hear you have some rip roaring fights at your house!" After a little investigation we deduced that Seth had told the babysitter "Mommy threw daddy's clock and broke it."

Years later I had carpal tunnel surgery, and nasal surgery the same year as my wife had a shoulder repaired, and was bitten by a pit bull, broke a bone, and had repair surgery. I made the comment; "We're falling apart". Next thing you know, rumors are around town we're getting divorced.

I have a niece who swears I threatened to beat up her two year old son because I was angry with her.

Like the old Norman Rockwell painting, spoken words will be repeated with changes, by the time they have been repeated enough times, they can change a lot.

Mrs. B says to first grade parents; "We'll believe half of what they say about you if you believe half of what they say about us.

Jody's divorce rumor is such a situation. It doesn't help to be careful what you say, If you say nothing, they make it up.

On the (travel) jobsite, the rule was, "If you haven't heard a good rumor by lunch, make one up!"

I refuse to automatically believe what I hear.

We built a very beautiful home for the perfect couple. I guess the husband was considered a catch. The wife is gorgeous! A year after the house, the rumor spread that she was having an affair with an older man well known in the community. I said no way! A 9.8 isn't going to throw it all away for a 2.9. She, (If she wanted an affair), could take her choice of men. Several well informed sources confirmed the rumor. Still I said no way. Eventually it became known that the older man was having a mental health crisis, the whole story came from his fantasies.

I see the beginning of a long dark road.

Hunters, fishermen, welders, and other liers gather here!

Quick, somebody make that a sign!

And I'm sure it goes back much farther in history, to every great or terrible leader of every empire that ever existed. It's the cry of the dictator, to rationalize his actions.
