Welding Tips and Tricks

Can anyone here comment on welding after having LASIK performed? I've been considering it because trifocals are a giant pita..I'm wondering how well it works for the distances needed to see what you're welding. Thanks

My understanding was the LASIK does a good job of correcting the distance vision, however, reading glasses are generally needed...
I have issues with astigmatism and with custom contact lenses, correction was great, however, as I have gotten older the need for reading lenses has increased... I can see and read without corrective lenses, distance... not so much. With corrective lenses, reading and up close is terrible... I would not consider LASIK for my self, just for the fact I wouldn't want to loose the ability to read, see the food I am eating, etc. without needing reading glasses. Just in the rare instance of some sort of disaster where I might be without any glasses... worst case scenario...

From what I've heard, a lot has changed in the past few years.

I've gotten lasik, and for the most part it doesn't interfere. You're eyes do become drier for a while and you'll have to use eye drops for a while. It's been a little over a year for me now and I still use regular eye drops but all in all it was worth. Also I had issues with dry eyes before lasik also.

Old people like me lose the ability to focus close because of lost tension in the muscles and tendons around the eye. Lasik doesn't change that. Lasik can fix long distance vision, or close up vision, at your choice. I haven't done it because astigmatism complicates the risks of a less than perfect result. If it isn't perfect they can't fix it with contact lenses. My nephew plays a lot of contact sports, glasses weren't working well. After Lasik, he's barely clear enough to drive. This result isn't what everyone gets, but you risk it.

I asked an optometrist whether I would be a good candidate for LASIK and how it would be for welding. He replied, "Let me put it this way, I don't know any dentists who have had LASIK." I guess that answers my question.

I have been welding since 2004 with prk eye correction surgery with no problems
