Which do you prefer for backing when welding: aluminum or copper?

I have been using copper when needed for backing on stainless and other materials. It seems better suited than AL for my use, I get away with a 1/4 plate that is 6x6 and it sure does a good job of pulling heat out from the workpiece.

I found it worked better than AL but then again I also might not be using a large enough piece of AL.

It depends.... For general copper, some times copper isn't allowed though

@Wes19: I'm interested in the statement that sometimes copper isn't allowed. I wonder what types of jobs these are?

Also, do they state reasons why, and do they advise what backing material should be used instead (do they nominate in the procedure sheet).

I generally prefer to use copper over aluminum, but am more interested in knowing about the special applications where copper cannot be used.

Depending on the job any risk of transfer is not allowed to be present.
